About this guide
Visit Franz Josef is an independent travel guide to Franz Josef/Waiau, Fox Glacier/Weheka and Ōkārito in Westland Tai Poutini National Park on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. It is written by Patrick Kühne, a travel publisher based in Germany.
Not an official site
This guide has no connection to the Department of Conservation, the regional tourism bodies or any tour operator. The Department of Conservation (Te Papa Atawhai) manages the national park and runs the Westland Tai Poutini National Park Visitor Centre at 69 Cron Street in Franz Josef, where you can get safety information for the glacier valleys, the weather forecast and a personal locator beacon. Track closures and park rules are published at doc.govt.nz.
Tourism West Coast is the regional tourism organisation for the coast from Karamea to Haast, at westcoastnz.com. Glacier Country, run by the Glacier Country Tourism Group at glaciercountry.co.nz, publishes the daily glacier access report that DOC refers visitors to. For road conditions on State Highway 6, the NZTA Journey Planner at journeys.nzta.govt.nz has the current state. If a track, a river crossing or a road closure matters for your plans, check it there on the day.
Where the facts come from
Walking times, track grades, park rules and visitor centre hours come from DOC. Rainfall figures come from NIWA, sunrise and twilight times from the US Naval Observatory, and bus routes from InterCity. Glacier history comes from published glaciology research and from news reports in the Otago Daily Times, RNZ and the NZ Herald. Driving distances were worked out with OpenStreetMap routing, and those numbers carry "about" or "roughly". Each page lists its sources, checked on 2 November 2026.
The glaciers and rivers here change quickly, and published figures do not always agree. The side road to Ōkārito is 13 km according to DOC and 10 km according to other sources, so we leave the number out. The distance from the Franz Josef viewpoint to the ice is given only with the date of the report it comes from.
How tours are picked
A tour appears here when it starts in Franz Josef, Fox Glacier or Ōkārito and fits the subject of the page. Flights that cross the Main Divide towards Aoraki/Mount Cook are included when they take off on this side of the Alps. Transfers and one-way trips appear only on the page about getting here. Duration, meeting point, age limits and what is included are taken from the tour pages. Where reviewers keep raising the same weak point, such as weather cancellations, time spent in the van or a quad route that never shows the glacier, the page says so. When the booking platform stops listing a tour, it disappears from the site automatically.
Some important trips cannot be booked through our partners, among them the boat tour on Ōkārito Lagoon and the white heron colony at Waitangiroto. We link those to the operator's own website, without a commission.
How the site is paid for
Tour cards and comparison tables link to GetYourGuide and, for tours not listed there, to Viator. If you book through one of these links, we receive a commission and your price stays the same. Prices and ratings are loaded from the platform; we do not write or change them.
We are not a tour operator and do not take bookings. Questions about a booking go to the platform or to the operator named on it.

The photos come from Unsplash and Pexels. Some show the exact place, others a similar scene elsewhere in New Zealand or beyond, so the captions describe only what is in the picture and name the photographer.
