Lake Mapourika is the water closest to Franz Josef, about ten minutes north of the village on State Highway 6. The guided trips on the lake all head into the Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary. Franz Josef Wilderness Tours runs the kayak and boat trips there. You meet in central Franz Josef, and a short transfer takes you to the lake and back, so you do not need a car.

These are trips that do not stop for rain. The operator calls its kayak tour an all-weather tour and says Lake Mapourika gets significantly less rain than the village, which is useful in a place that averages 5,751 mm a year. On days when cloud keeps the helicopters on the ground, the lake trips still run.

Kayaking Lake Mapourika

The three-hour kayak tour starts with a briefing on the shore. You then paddle a stable double sea kayak across the lake and into a narrow creek in the rainforest, inside the kiwi sanctuary. Guides point out birds along the way, among them the kōtuku or white heron, tūī and bellbirds. Jackets, dry bags and wet-weather trousers are supplied when needed, together with sunscreen and insect repellent, and the guides take photos you can keep. Food is not included, so bring a snack and water.

Reviews praise the guides, the reflections on calm days and the rain gear. One reviewer found it mostly a solid paddle across the lake and back with little explanation, and on cloudy days the peaks behind the lake stay hidden.

Kayak and walk in the kiwi sanctuary

The four-hour version adds a landing. You paddle to a small beach that can only be reached from the water and continue on foot along a private trail built through the rainforest of the Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary. This forest is home to the rowi, the rarest of the five kiwi species, whose only natural population lives in and around Ōkārito. Tea and coffee are served, and the minimum age is 4. DOC counts somewhat more than 600 rowi today and aims for 800 by 2028. Ōkārito became one of five kiwi sanctuaries in 2000, and DOC runs a recovery programme across 98 square kilometres of forest here. Kiwi are active at night, so a rowi sighting on the walk is unlikely.

Cruising on the Hanna-K

If paddling is not for you, the Hanna-K is a boat with an enclosed cabin and a covered deck. The two-hour cruise heads towards the kiwi sanctuary while the skipper talks about the lake, the forest and its birds, and tea and coffee are on board. You may bring your own food and drink. National park fees and the transfer are included.

Reviews mostly credit the skipper. Some guests saw only a few herons and little other wildlife, and one asked for a speaker at the back of the boat because the commentary was hard to hear there. Sit inside if you want to follow it.

The 2.5-hour cruise and walk adds a stop in a bay of the sanctuary. The guided walk ashore covers about 400 metres of natural rainforest track, with exposed roots, uneven ground and a few big steps, past trees the operator dates at up to 1,200 years old. Tea or coffee is served at a lookout, and poles are provided. It is not suitable for people with limited mobility or wheelchair users.

Paddling the Ōkārito Lagoon

Ōkārito lies about 25 minutes north of Franz Josef by car: north on State Highway 6 to Ōkārito Forks, then west on a sealed road to the coast. In 1866 more than 1,500 people lived in the gold-mining town, and Donovan’s Store from the 1860s is one of the oldest buildings on the West Coast. Today Ōkārito has around 30 permanent residents, no shops and no fuel, so fill up in Franz Josef. The lagoon is the largest unmodified coastal wetland in New Zealand, and DOC records more than 76 bird species there, among them the kōtuku and the royal spoonbill.

Okarito Kayaks runs guided paddles of two and three hours on the lagoon. Allow up to three or four hours in total. Both start from the kayak base on The Strand in Ōkārito, not in Franz Josef, so drive there yourself. DOC warns against crossing river mouths and lagoon entrances at Ōkārito, where quicksand and fast water have cost lives. Read more on our Ōkārito page.

Sandflies, sun and the time of year

All these trips run year-round. Summer brings long evenings, with the sun setting after 21:00 in December, while in June the light goes before 17:30. Sandflies are common in the park and at Ōkārito. DEET is the most effective repellent, and for children Te Ara recommends products with less than 10 percent. Sandflies bite less when you keep moving, which is one argument for the kayak. On the water, UV is strong all year, so sunscreen belongs in the dry bag even in winter.

If you bring your own kayak or fishing gear, DOC asks you to clean, check and dry it between waterways to stop the spread of didymo. For a quieter walk with mirror reflections, see the guided tour to Lake Matheson on our guided walks page.

What travellers say about paddling Lake Mapourika

4.9 (141 reviews) · Reviews from GetYourGuide, shortened, names abbreviated

★★★★★ Sue (United Kingdom) · February 2026

Beautiful mirror surface to the lake so the reflections were amazing. Shame about the cloud cover so we didn’t see the tops of the mountains. The protective equipment provided was excellent - waterproof jackets, personal floatation devices and neoprene skirts to seal us into the kayak meant we stayed dry and protected from sandflies! …

★★★★★ Jeri (Singapore) · November 2025

We woke up for our morning kayak a little disappointed because it was drizzling, but FJWT very helpfully provided rain gear and kayak skirts so it turned into a very interesting and memorable experience paddling through a rainy misty scene …

★★★★★ Nicole (Australia) · October 2025

… He had loads of knowledge about the lake, the region and the flora and fauna - including edible wild plants in the area. …

★★★★★ Melissa (New Zealand) · November 2025

Terrific! Our guides were great. The kayaks were quite stable. And the lake was delightfully mirror-like.

The trip runs in drizzle too, and the supplied jackets and spray skirts keep paddlers dry and clear of sandflies. Under cloud the peaks stay hidden, and some guests would have liked more explanation on the water.

Questions travellers ask

Do I need kayaking experience?

No. The Mapourika trips use stable double sea kayaks and start with a briefing on the shore. You paddle with a partner and a guide stays with the group.

What happens if it rains?

The Lake Mapourika trips go ahead in rain. Jackets, trousers and dry bags are handed out on the kayak trips, and the boat has an enclosed cabin and a covered deck.

Will I see a kiwi?

Do not count on it. The trips enter the Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary, home of the rare rowi, but kiwi are shy and active at night. Live kiwi are on view at the West Coast Wildlife Centre in Franz Josef.

Which trip suits children?

The boat cruise is the easiest choice for small children. The kayak and walking trip lists a minimum age of 4, and the cruise with a walk ashore is not suitable for anyone with limited mobility.

Can I bring my own kayak?

You can, but clean, check and dry it before moving between lakes and rivers to stop the spread of didymo, and never paddle across river mouths at Ōkārito.
